PP/Print Gallery Tokyo is pleased to present Kazakh Mythology (Қазақ мифологиясы), an exhibition of woodcut prints by Kazakhstani artist and educator Karim Baigutov, on view from April 18 (Sat) to April 20 (Mon), 2026.

Karim Baigutov was born in 1991 in Taraz, Kazakhstan, and currently teaches at the Faculty of Arts at Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University in Almaty, a city that once flourished as a key hub along the Silk Road. His practice is grounded in Kazakh mythology. In this exhibition, motifs such as the shanyraq (the circular structure symbolizing the center of the home) and the Baiterek (Tree of Life) offer a way to approach myth as something that continues to shape cultural thought today.

“Kazakh mythology is not something distant or ancient, but a living cultural language. Through symbols such as the shanyraq, the Tree of Life, the soul, the shaman, and other mythic beings, the works explore memory, nature, and human existence. Woodcut printmaking plays a central role in this exhibition. Each carved line becomes a lasting mark, much like myth leaves its trace in cultural memory. The exhibition invites viewers to encounter Kazakh mythology as a world of images, meanings, and questions that still resonate today.” — Karim Baigutov

PP/プリントギャラリーでは、4月18日（土）から20日（月）までの3日間、カザフスタンのアーティストで教育者、カリム・バイグトフによる木版画の展覧会「カザフの神話 Қазақ мифологиясы」を共催という形でおこないます。これまでとは趣が少し異なる展示ですが、新しい試みとして開催します。

カリム・バイグトフは1991年、カザフスタンの都市タラズに生まれ、現在はアルマトイのアバイ・カザフ国立教育大学の芸術学部で教鞭をとっています。アルマトイは、かつてシルクロードの要衝の一つとして栄えたカザフ最大の都市です。バイグトフはカザフの神話を主題に制作と研究を併行しておこなっていますが、本展では、シャニラク（家の中心を象徴する円環の構造）やバイテレク（生命の樹）といったカザフ神話のイメージを手がかりに、神話を過去の物語ではなく現在でも生き続ける文化的な思考の枠組みとして、木版画作品を通じて提示します。

作家より：「カザフ神話を遠い過去の物語としてではなく、現代にも生き続ける文化の言葉として捉えている。シャニラク、バイテレク（生命の樹）、魂、シャーマン、そして神話的存在といった象徴を通じ、作品は記憶や自然、目に見えない世界、そして人間のあり方を見つめ直す。木版画は本展の中心となる表現技法で、木に刻まれた線の一本一本は、神話が文化の記憶に残してきた痕跡のように確かなかたちをとどめる。本展はカザフ神話をイメージと意味、そして問いかけの世界として体験していただく機会となるだろう」　─カリム・バイグトフ
