Peter Brötzmann (*1941) was born in Remscheid, Germany.
In his early years he had an innate respect for art, but
in the 60s his main form of artistic expression shifted to music.
Those activities have continued to the present,
extending far beyond the field of free jazz. He established
the music label FMP (Free Music Production) in 1969.

He has also designed most of his own record jackets,
using a typewriter, lettering and his own hand-made types.
In his design, we see the coexistence of improvised
expression and planned rigidity. This exhibition shows his
record jackets’design and typography from the period
FMP was established into the middle of the 1980s.
The booklet B R Ö T Z M (published by fischiff VERLAG),
which features the design for FMP record jackets
shown in this exhibition will be on sale.

ペーター・ブロッツマンは1941年ドイツのレムシャイトに生まれる。
アートを志向した50年代を経て、60年代に入り表現活動の核は
音楽へとシフト。その後、現在に至るまでいわゆるフリー・ジャズの
枠におさまらない演奏活動を続ける。1969年には音楽レーベル
F M P (Free Music Production)を設立。

ブロッツマンはまた自らの演奏を収めたレコードジャケットの
ほぼ全てをデザインしていることでも知られている。
タイプライターにより打ち出された文字やレタリング、自身の手によって
彫られた木活字を要素として使用することで、一見ストイックで
構築的なデザインの内に、即興の痕跡が刻み込まれる。

本展示では、F M P レーベルの創設期である70年代初頭から80年代の
半ばにかけてブロッツマンにより制作されたレコードジャケットの
デザイン/タイポグラフィを参考となる資料を交えて概観する。加えて、
本展に出品されるレコードジャケットを収めた作品集 B R Ö T Z M
(2400円/制作はfischiff VERLAG)を会場にて販売する。

Free Music Production

Free Music Production is a record label that was established
in Berlin by Brötzmann, along with Geber, Kowald and
von Schlippenbach in 1969.Its main focus is free jazz music
and it continues to release numerous recordings.

Free Music Productionは1969年に、Peter Brötzmann Jost Gebers
Peter Kowald Alexander von Schlippenbach によってベルリンで設立された
レコードレーベル。フリー・ジャズを中心に現在まで数多くの
レコードをリリースしている。
