An immersive exhibition revisiting Heinz von Foerster’s explorations of
understanding through play with 4D objects:

In 1971-72, under the supervision of Heinz von Foerster, the Biological Computer Lab (BCL) at the University of Illinois conducted groundbreaking experiments on the nature of understanding. Researchers explored whether deeper insight could emerge by allowing participants to engage interactively with four-dimensional objects.

Fifty years after the BCL closed its doors, artists Underware and Rob Bothof revisit this historical research in their second joint exhibition at Print Gallery Tokyo. Sensorium Motorium invites visitors to engage with paradimensional type in a multisensory installation composed of prints, immersive sound, and interactive video. This specially conceived exhibition challenges audiences to experience their own process of understanding by playing with the unfamiliar and perceiving beyond conventional dimensions.

ハインツ・フォン・フォースターによる、4次元的な物体との「遊びを通じた理解」の探究をベースにした感覚的な体験:

1971年から72年、ハインツ・フォン・フォースター監修のもと、アメリカのイリノイ大学生物コンピュータ研究所（BCL）では理解の本質に関する画期的な実験がおこなわれた。参加者が四次元的な「物」とインタラクティブに関わることで、より深い洞察に至るのか、その可能性を探求した。
BCLが閉鎖されてから50年を迎える今、アーティストユニットUnderwareとRob Bothofは、この歴史的な研究を新たな視点から探求した。この展示は、Underwareが東京のプリントギャラリーで共催する2度目の展覧会である。

センサリウム・モトリウムは、観客が「パラディメンショナル（超次元的）」な文字/書体（Type）に触れることで、自らの「理解のプロセス」をあらためて経験し考えるよう促すインスタレーションである。会場では、ポスターとして印刷された文字、音響、インタラクティブな映像などのメディアを用い、来場者に対して感覚と知覚の境界を揺さぶる体験を提供する。私たちは、慣れ親しんだ次元の枠を超えることで、どのように「理解する」ことが可能になるのか。
