To coincide with the release of “Image Continuum,” a book by Amsterdam-based graphic designer Linda van Deursen, Print Gallery Tokyo will be exhibiting a small selection of books she has designed. In “Image Continuum” van Deursen talks on the subject of her own image consumption, and how the process of image editing, selecting and sequencing presents itself in her graphic design work and teaching.
The fourteen publications included in the exhibition provide an overview of this longstanding interest, featuring a selection of van Deursen's collaborations with artists and photographers, and independent research developed as contributions to various publications.
“Image Continuum” is the first book in a new lecture-to-book series titled Slideshow, inviting graphic designers to share the research, methods, and material processes behind their applied work, positioning their practice as a site of inquiry. The series is published through APPLIED WORK, a new imprint within the MA Graphic Design at the Estonian Academy of Arts.
On Saturday, 20 December, there will be a book launch and reception together with editors Alexandra Margetic and Sean Yendrys, who will introduce the book. Linda van Deursen will join via zoom to say hello and answer audience questions.

アムステルダムを拠点に活動するデザイナー、リンダ・ファン・ドゥールセンのレクチャーをまとめた書籍『Image Continuum』の刊行に際し、プリントギャラリーにてささやかな展覧会をひらきます。
ファン・ドゥールセンは、1987年にデザインスタジオ「Mevis & van Deursen」を設立。アートブックの領域で高い評価を残すほか、アムステルダム市立美術館をはじめとした文化施設のサイン計画など数多くのプロジェクトに携わってきました。ヘリット・リートフェルト・アカデミーでは2014年までグラフィックデザイン学科長を務めるなど、実践・教育の両軸を持ってデザインに関わっています。
この度刊行される『Image Continuum』は、エストニア芸術アカデミー・グラフィックデザイン修士課程で行われたレクチャーをもとに企画・編集されました。イメージを消費することについての考察とともに、編集・選択・配列といった行為が彼女のデザイン実践や教育のなかでどのように立ち現れているかについて語られています。本展では、これまでに彼女が関わった14の出版物がそのレククチャーの補助線として並びます。
12月20日（土）のブックローンチ/本のお披露目当日には、ビデオ通話を通じてリンダ・ファン・ドゥールセンとの質疑応答を行います。会場からは、本書の企画・編集を行ったエストニア芸術アカデミーのアレクサンドラ・マルゲティッチとショーン・イェンドリースが参加します。ぜひお越しください。

Print Gallery is pleased to welcome Michael Renner, a graphic designer based in Basel, Switzerland, and professor, currently the director at the Institute Digital Communication Environments (IDCE), Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW.
The event/exhibition features posters designed by Renner, publications from the Visual Communication Institute, as well as a selection of his ceramic works.
In addition, we will screen documentation from the 2024 exhibition held at the Tinguely Museum, Basel:
“Unleashed — Revisiting Early Explorations of Interactive Media in Visual Communication Design.”
This exhibition offered an overview of the school’s explorations in interactive media and design education since the early 2000s.
Michael Renner began his career in 1986 as a young graphic designer at Apple Computer Inc. and The Understanding Business (TUB) in California, gaining first-hand experience on the U.S. West Coast during a period of rapid digital development.
In 1990, he founded his own studio in Basel, working with corporate and cultural clients, while also beginning to teach information design, design research, and design processes at the Basel School of Design. He became head of the Visual Communication Deaprtment in 1999.
As head of the Visual Communication Institute, Renner guided a major shift in the curriculum, building on the legacy of the so-called Basel School—Emil Ruder, Armin Hofmann, Wolfgang Weingart, and others—while steering the program toward emerging technologies and new media from the early 2000s onward.
Today, Renner serves as Professor and Director at the Institute Digital Communication Environments (IDCE)/Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW, where he continues to research and teach the meaning and generative processes of images within digital environments. His practice emphasizes knowledge gained through making, positioning the design process itself as both method and subject of inquiry.
He is a member of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale).

プリントギャラリーでは、スイス・バーゼルのグラフィックデザイナーでバーゼル造形芸術大学（Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW @hgkbasel_fhnw のデジタル・コミュニケーション環境研究所で教鞭を執るMichael Renner（マイケル・レナー）を迎え、レナーが制作したポスターや大学の出版物、自作の陶磁器等を展示します。
併せて2024年にバーゼルのティンゲリー美術館で開催された、2000年以降の同校でのインタラクティブデザイン教育の試みを概観した展覧会「Unleashed — Revisiting Early Explorations of Interactive Media in Visual Communication Design」の映像を公開します。マイケル・レナーは私の留学時代の先生の一人でもあり、、気軽な会とイベントですのでグラフィックデザインからインタラクティブまで...興味のある方、とりわけ学生の方々など、ぜひお気軽にお越しくださいませ。
Michael Renner（マイケル・レナー）：1986年、若手のグラフィックデザイナーとして、カリフォルニアのアップルコンピューターとTUB(The Understanding Business)で働き、デジタルツールが急速に発展するアメリカ西海岸で現場で経験を積む。1990年には自身のスタジオをバーゼルに設立し企業・文化機関のプロジェクトに携わり、同年からバーゼル・スクール・オブ・デザインで教え始めた。99年にはヴィジュアルコミュニケーション学部長に就任。
バーゼルのデザイン学校の、デザイン史上ではいわゆる「バーゼル派」と称されることもあるエミール・ルーダー、アーミン・ホフマン、ウォルフガング・ワインガルト等々が築いてきた過去の遺産を受け継ぎつつ、新たな技術やメディアに対応すべく教育カリキュラムの面で大きく舵を切った。
現在はバーゼル造形芸術大学で、デジタル・コミュニケーション環境研究所 @hgkbasel_idce の教授およびディレクターを務め、デジタル環境下におけるイメージの意味とその生成過程について研究と教育をおこなう。制作を通して知識を深めていくアプローチを重視し、デザインプロセスそのものを研究手法と位置づけている。

尾形愛は2023年の3ヶ月間、東京都あきる野市での滞在制作を通じて同地をいたく気に入りました。翌年からあきる野へ移り住み、アトリエを構えることになります。そうして新天地に訪れた作家の新鮮な眼に写ったのは、ほど近い渓谷や明媚な自然の風景ではなく、意外にもその家内について。新生活への思わぬ闖入者たち、つまり家の敷居を軽々と超えてくる虫たちと植物と、すきま風ご近所さん。家に入り込んでくる細やかな刺激が彼女に筆を取らせます。本展では、この1年余りのあきる野での生活、制作のなかで生まれた作品を展覧します。そのほか、リトグラフによる、手製本50部限りの本のかたちをした小さな作品『カナブンが大きな音を立てるので私は怒っている』（well,2024）と、その複製版（リソグラフ）も並びます。

An immersive exhibition revisiting Heinz von Foerster’s explorations of understanding through play with 4D objects:
In 1971-72, under the supervision of Heinz von Foerster, the Biological Computer Lab (BCL) at the University of Illinois conducted groundbreaking experiments on the nature of understanding. Researchers explored whether deeper insight could emerge by allowing participants to engage interactively with four-dimensional objects.
Fifty years after the BCL closed its doors, artists Underware and Rob Bothof revisit this historical research in their second joint exhibition at Print Gallery Tokyo. Sensorium Motorium invites visitors to engage with paradimensional type in a multisensory installation composed of prints, immersive sound, and interactive video. This specially conceived exhibition challenges audiences to experience their own process of understanding by playing with the unfamiliar and perceiving beyond conventional dimensions.

Sensorium Motorium（センサリウム・モトリウム）*
ハインツ・フォン・フォースターによる、4次元的な物体との「遊びを通じた理解」の探究をもとにした感覚的な体験:
1971年から72年、ハインツ・フォン・フォースター監修のもと、アメリカのイリノイ大学生物コンピュータ研究所（BCL）では理解の本質に関する画期的な実験がおこなわれた。参加者が四次元的な「物」とインタラクティブに関わることで、より深い洞察に至るのか、その可能性を探求した。
BCLが閉鎖されてから50年を迎える今、アーティストユニットUnderwareとRob Bothofは、この歴史的な研究を新たな視点から探求した。この展示は、Underwareが東京のプリントギャラリーで共催する2度目の展覧会である。
センサリウム・モトリウムは、観客が「パラディメンショナル（超次元的）」な文字/書体（Type）に触れることで、自らの「理解のプロセス」をあらためて経験し考えるよう促すインスタレーションである。会場では、ポスターとして印刷された文字、音響、インタラクティブな映像などのメディアを用い、来場者に対して感覚と知覚の境界を揺さぶる体験を提供する。私たちは、慣れ親しんだ次元の枠を超えることで、どのように「理解する」ことが可能になるのか。

都会に漂う〈たましい〉の数は人知れず今日もただ虚しく
増減を繰り返します。すれ違いざまに起こる〈たましい〉たちの
触れ合いは今日も無数に不特定の場所で起こって、
見知らぬところでは、ある人の記憶になり、季節が過ぎ去っては、
その記憶たちはどこか霧の向こうで揺らめいて、
いつしか消えていきます…（後略）
