“I remember the very first time I visited my father at his workplace
in Zurich — I grew up in Basel — I was about ten or twelve years old.
He mainly worked parttime in the legendary hand-composing room Hürlimann
(Handsetzerei Hürlimann) in the Niederdorf district in Zurich.
After he had briefly shown me the workshop and the craft, I resolutely said
that I would definitely never want to learn such a crappy craft.
In 1973, I began an apprenticeship as a hand composer after all. At the time,
the profession was treated as a creative one. It had been a bit of
an emergency solution for me, as I had failed the entry exam
for the graphic design masterclass. Later on, I was very impressed by
the philosophy of the hand-composing room Hürlimann and its owner,
Adolf Hürlimann.

In contrast to the firm that trained me, which was run strictly and with
a military-like hierarchy, the employees at Hürlimann spent more of
their working hours politicizing, fooling around, pissing into the sink and discussing,
than actually composing and printing. For the New Year, Adolf Hürlimann
would compose and print a small edition of books in letterpress and
give them away to his friends and clients.

In 1976, during my four year apprenticeship, I was allowed to compose
and print my first handprinted book in the Hürlimann composing room.
I would take the train from Basel to Zurich on Saturdays. All I wanted was to
entirely produce a printing matter by hand;
the text, the design, hand composition, print and finishing.”

Handsetzerei Hürlimann
