Lee Kyeongsoo Exhibition “Stray Birds: Letter Practice”

Lee Kyeongsoo is a graphic designer from
Seoul, Korea. He studied Visual Communication Design
at Dankook University. In 2001, he began working
for Ahn graphics and established the independent design
studio Workroom in 2006. He now teaches typography
and editorial design.
After learning typography from Helmut Schmid at
Hongik University in 2006, steadily he has been
mastering typography using Hangeul and the Latin
alphabet and focuses on personal interest in
typography such as space between letters, paragraphs
and pages. In early 2016, he held a solo exhibition
of his works at Gallery Factory, Seoul.

In our exhibition, we exhibit the poster series “blow-up”,
which expand and framed the details of his past
“typographic problems”, togerher with his cooperator or
client’s comments on him or his works. In addition,
”bari abandoned” posters, on which the arrangement
of lyrics show singer’s breath, will be exhibited.

Inspired by a class given by typographer/designer
Helmut Schmid in 2006, Lee Kyeongsoo realized that
typography is a craft. At the same time,
he asked himself. Does “craftsmanship” makes
any sense in front of a monitor?

He looks back on the evolution of the typesetting
process, noting that while it previously required
the professional skills of craftsmen to compose letters,
“current software programs now play the role of
the craftsperson”, so the connection between graphic
design and the word “crafts” sounds totally out of place.
However, he pays close attention to the details,
even those that no one else may ever notice, explaining
“My work is different from the automatic adjustments
that draw on software”.
He adds that “recognizing this difference between
manual and automated typesetting” is crucial for graphic
designers and typographers, calling it “an essential
part of craftsmanship that a typographer needs to be
equipped with”.

Gallery Factory
