We hosts ‘Squama B-Sides’exhibition at Print Gallery Tokyo.
Maximilian Schachtner, a creative director based in Munich, Germany, co-leads the design studio ‘Daily Dialogue’and co-founded the music label ‘Squama Recordings’ with producer Martin Brugger in 2019. Squama has released a diverse range of albums with a strongly DIY ethoos, transcend traditional genre classifications and hierarchical structures. Schachtner has consistently shaped Squama’s identity, valuing its visual aspect as much as the music.
This exhibition was initiated by Schachtner to create a collaborative and open-minded environment, applying the universal concept of remixing to the realm of visual arts. For the exhibition, ten artists and designers from around the world were invited to use the label's catalog as a reference/prompt creatively reinterpret individual releases or the overall label image. Additionally, Squama’s LPs and specially produced merchandise will be displayed and available for purchase.

“...The works on display from 10 artists and designers from around the globe all use the‘official’Squama catalog as a prompt to create a new piece that combines trust, fandom and the sensibilities of each unique practice. To exhibit a label through the eyes of its own community upends the standard A/B dichotomy typically separating the realms of commercial and independent, normative and alternative, labor and love. It erases the boundary between Squama and its audience, inviting them into a creative ecosystem where all parts exist on an even plane

プリントギャラリーでは展覧会《Squama:B-SIDES》を開催します。
ドイツのミュンヘンを拠点とするクリエイティブディレクター、マキシミリアン・シャハトナーはデザインスタジオDaily Dialogueを共同で主宰するほか、2019年には音楽レーベルSquama Recordingsをプロデューサーのマーティン・ブルッガーと共同で設立。既存の音楽ジャンルや階層にとらわれず、多分にDIY的な自由なスタンスで多彩なアルバムをリリースしてきた。シャハトナーが一貫して手がけてきたレーベルの視覚的側面も、音源と等価なものとして重視され、レーベルの大きな特徴となっている。
本展では〈協力的かつ柔軟な思考を促進するための場を提供することを目指し〉、シャハトナーがイニシエーターとして各国の10人のアーティストやデザイナーに作品制作を依頼。Squamaのカタログ/ラインナップを参照元として、個別の作品やSquamaの全体像を再解釈し制作した様々な作品を展示。あわせて、これまでにりリリースされたLPや関連グッズなどを展示・販売する。

《……この展示のため世界中から集まった10人のアーティストやデザイナーが、Squamaの公式カタログをいわばプロンプト（指示書）としてレーベルへの信頼やファン心理、あるいは各々の実践に基づいた感性を融合させ新たな作品を制作した。音楽レーベルを、そのコミュニティ［レーベル、アーティスト、協同/協力者］ の視点から展示することは、商業的かインディペンデントか、主流かオルタナか、仕事か愛かといった、音楽制作の領域を分断してきたAかBかの二項対立を乗り越える試みだ。それはレーベルとその聴衆の間にある壁を取り払い、すべてが対等な立場で併存する創造的な生態系へと聴衆を誘う ─ side by side。
