Print Gallery is pleased to welcome Michael Renner, a graphic designer based in Basel, Switzerland, and professor, currently the director at the Institute Digital Communication Environments (IDCE), Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW.
The event/exhibition features posters designed by Renner, publications from the Visual Communication Institute, as well as a selection of his ceramic works.
In addition, we will screen documentation from the 2024 exhibition held at the Tinguely Museum, Basel: “Unleashed — Revisiting Early Explorations of Interactive Media in Visual Communication Design.” This exhibition offered an overview of the school’s explorations in interactive media and design education since the early 2000s.

Michael Renner began his career in 1986 as a young graphic designer at Apple Computer Inc. and The Understanding Business (TUB) in California, gaining first-hand experience on the U.S. West Coast during a period of rapid digital development.
In 1990, he founded his own studio in Basel, working with corporate and cultural clients, while also beginning to teach information design, design research, and design processes at the Basel School of Design. He became head of the Visual Communication Deaprtment in 1999.
As head of the Visual Communication Institute, Renner guided a major shift in the curriculum, building on the legacy of the so-called Basel School—Emil Ruder, Armin Hofmann, Wolfgang Weingart, and others—while steering the program toward emerging technologies and new media from the early 2000s onward.

Today, Renner serves as Professor and Director at the Institute Digital Communication Environments (IDCE)/Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW, where he continues to research and teach the meaning and generative processes of images within digital environments. His practice emphasizes knowledge gained through making, positioning the design process itself as both method and subject of inquiry.
He is a member of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale).
