Underware is an international type-collective located in Amsterdam,
Den Haag and Helsinki, established in 1999. They publish about type,
they talk about type and encourage (and mobilize) others to
talk about type.

The exhibition will feature the first public screening of
the “grammatographical” variable letter “Liza Y”, for which the cooperated with
the dutch artist Rob Bothoff. The presentation will be accompanied
by three new posters and a series of recent publications.

プリントギャラリーでは、オランダのタイプファウンドリー「Underware」による展覧会
「タイポグラフィからグラマトグラフィへ」を2019年9月6日(金)から8日(日)まで開催し、
9月7日(土)にはレクチャーもございます。

Underwareは、1999年にドイツ人のアキエム・ヘルムリング、オランダ人のバス・ヤコブ、
フィンランド人のサミ・コルテマキの3人によってアムステルダム、デン・ハーグ、
ヘルシンキ、3つの都市を拠点に設立されたデジタルフォント制作とグラフィックデザインのスタジオです。
書体（Type）の制作から、書体に関する書籍の発行、書体に関しての講演や啓蒙活動など、
いわば書体にまつわるあらゆることを活動範囲とし国際的に活躍してきました。
本展では、Underwareがオランダのアーティスト、ロブ・ボトフと共同で制作した
「グラマトグラフィカル*」なバリアブルフォント「Liza Y」の映像が世界で初めて公開されるほか、
underwareの最近の発行物、展示に際し制作された3点のポスター等の展示を予定しています。

*Underwareが提唱する「グラマトグラフィ」とは：
既成のフォントとは異なり、ユーザーや読者に反応してその都度変化し、あたかも筆記のように
表示/表記される不定形な、可変的（バリアブル）な文字/フォントのこと。

レクチャーの内容について：
Underwareは国際タイポグラフィ協会（ATypi）主催の
東京でのコンフェランスの登壇者として来日します。プリントギャラリーでの
レクチャーは、同コンフェランスでの講演内容がベースになる予定です。

タイポグラフィの分野でここ数年最も進化を遂げた技術の一つといえば、
バリアブルフォントだ。グーテンベルクが可動式の鉛活字を発明して以来、
おそらくは最も意義のある発明と言ってもいいだろう。
レクチャーでは、私たちUnderwareがてかげてきた、ここ最近の
バリアブルフォントのプロジェクトを紹介し、この技術の可能性について
批評的に検討したい。
